In the province of Catania a hunter drowned trying to save his dog which had accidentally fallen into an artificial lake.
On December 23, a 35-year-old hunter drowned while trying to save his dog who had fallen into an artificial lake in the countryside of Castel di Iudica, in the province of Catania. The man, a worker from Zafferana Etnea, had gone out at dawn with his setter to go hunting, but he never returned. The alarm was raised by his wife and one of the daughters who sent messages over the Internet asking for news of their father.
The searches began by the Civil Protection, Forestry Guard, Carabinieri and Fire Brigade who shortly after found the carcass of the dog floating in the artificial lake and the man's rifle on one side of the reservoir. At this point the divers of the Fire Brigade intervened who found and recovered the man's body on the bottom of the pond.
