The Monza Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into environmental disaster and water poisoning due to hydrocarbon contamination of the Lambro river.
Serious environmental damage in Brianza: at least 600 thousand liters of oil and diesel ended up in the Lambro river, the black wave traveling on the river has already caused the death of some animals, numerous carcasses of ducks and mallards that have emerged from the water.
The oil spill passed through Milan and arrived in Lodi yesterday afternoon. Polluted water has also reached the canals which are widespread in Val padana, used to water fields and vegetable gardens.
Today the oily tide has reached the Po and the polluting material will affect the river in the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia and Ferrara until Monday. There is fear of an environmental disaster with serious damage to the marine ecosystem if the material arrives in the Adriatic Sea.
The pollutant leaked from the deposits of the former Lombarda Petroli refinery in Villasanta.
The Prefecture of Milan has activated the emergency aid coordination center. Attempts are being made to recover the polluting material with the aid of a dewatering pump. It is also a hunt for those responsible for what happened. The malicious act is not excluded.
