The outcome of the seminar on Woodcock that took place in Cutrofiano (LE) was good, from which the excellent state of health of the wild in Salento emerged.
The study seminar on Beccaccia took place in recent days in the council chamber of the Municipality of Cutrofiano (LE), organized by the Beccaccia Study Center - Southern Italy, by the Beccacciai d'Italia association, in collaboration with the ATC of Lecce and with the Province of Lecce. From the presentation of the analysis of all the data collected this year in Salento, a good state of health of the Woodcock was highlighted.
The Councilor for Productive and Hunting Activities of the Province of Lecce, Salvatore Polimeno, underlined the importance of the seminar held in Cutrofiano (LE) on hunting issues, "The purely" shooting "aspect absolutely in the background and spotlight aimed, instead, on the knowledge of the Woodcock and on the utmost attention to the delicacy of the species and to the fight against the forms of hunting prohibited by law, in particular the so-called "post", which are the real cause of most of the killings of this scolopacidae ".
Continuing the councilor Polimeno affirms "The value of such an event certainly contributes to culturally enrich those who practice hunting in a serious and sustainable way even if they are not a hunter, I look carefully at this world, remembering the distinction that my father made between "Hunters" and "shooters" ".
Continuing underlines Polimeno, “In addition, the hunter is often a real sentinel of the environment, indicating various polluting objects found regularly in the area and reporting these findings to the competent bodies”.
To start the works one of the promoters of the event, the ATC president of Lecce Daniele Danieli, followed by greetings from the mayor of Cutrofiano Oriele Rolli; then the word was passed to the president of the Lecce Chamber of Commerce Alfredo Prete, a well-known passionate hunter, who underlined the importance of the new figure of the sustainable hunter for the management of the fauna and environmental heritage, then highlighting how the hunting world moves a important economy in consideration of all the companies that revolve around it.
The president of Beccacciai d'Italia, Paolo Pennacchini illustrated the results of the data collected in the study on the Beccaccia starting from the reading of the wings collected in Puglia during the past hunting season, underlining how the young-adult relationship was very good, around the 88%, a sign of an excellent reproductive year (a percentage of 70%, in fact, indicates a good state of health of the species).
The president of the Hungarian woodcock, as well as esteemed scholar of the University of Budapest, Denes Fluck, then spoke, illustrating the migratory lines of woodcocks also as a consequence of the new climatic conditions.
Then again the intervention of Giuseppe Raho, head of the Study Center on Woodcock-South Italy, who illustrated the data obtained from the monitoring of the pre-nuptial review of the woodcock carried out with the pointing dog in February and March 2012, organized together with the Province of Lecce and the ATC Lecce. In conclusion, the examination of all the data collected this year in Salento highlighted a good state of health of the Woodcock.
The Specialization course on Woodcock was also held within the Seminar, with the aim of forming a group of specialized "monitors", to whom to entrust the collection of data during the period from October to March. The topics covered were migration and climate change, woodcock ethology, analysis of natural habitats, wing reading, sexing, hunting ethics and new behaviors. To demonstrate how the hunting culture is changing, the organizers also highlighted the attentive presence of some passionate women.
On 22 and 23 June next, in Limoges, there will be the annual meeting of Fanbpo, the European association that gathers all the associations that carefully and scientifically study this wild, during which all the data will be compared and analyzed, so that proper management of the species is coordinated at European level; Salento and Puglia will also be present and will illustrate the data collected.
