Wild boars cause too much damage in the province of Verbania, thanks to containment measures to protect the environment and crops.
The province of Verbania has fully implemented the plan for the containment of the ungulate population aimed at reducing damage to crops and the number of road accidents. In 2011, 1074 wild boars were killed in the Verbano Cusio Ossola area, compared to 958 in 2010.
The provincial councilor for the protection of wildlife, Alberto Preioni, explained on the question that "The hunters, owners or conductors of agricultural funds, identified by the Province as coadjutors and municipal referents, were those who implemented the greatest number of interventions, both during the hunting season and before the same season, with the aim of reducing damage to agricultural activities and road accidents due to wildlife ".
It is estimated that the accidents caused by the excessive presence of ungulates on the regional territory have increased in such a way as to require suitable measures to bring the situation back to the normal threshold; only in 2011 damages were ascertained for an amount exceeding two million and eight hundred thousand euros, of which only 103 thousand euros in the territory of Verbano Cusio Ossola.
It is therefore necessary to optimize the collaboration between the Public Administration and the agricultural-hunting world so that interventions aimed at protecting the environmental, economic and safety interests of the territory and of those who live there have the best results.
