Hunting: Regional councilor Stival reiterates the need to bring Cansiglio deer back to 1.000 - 1.500
The anomalous numerical growth of the deer population in the Cansiglio forest, on the border between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, today estimated at between 2.000 and 2.500 specimens compared to the 3-400 units estimated a decade ago, was the central theme of the third and last day of presence of the Veneto Region at the “Hunting Show”, the International Exhibition of hunting, nature and sport shooting, at the Vicenza Fair.
In the presence of the regional councilor for hunting Daniele Stival and his colleague from the Province of Belluno Silver De Zolt, the issue was addressed during a technical conference, focused on the Interregional Agreement for the control of the deer population in Cansiglio, signed by the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions, the Provinces of Treviso and Belluno and the State Forestry Corps.
“This situation - underlined Stival - constitutes a real emergency for the forest pastoral habitats, which are now showing considerable damage. Let us be clear - he added - that here it is not a question of the interest of hunters, but of a need to safeguard natural balances, a territory and the agricultural activities that take place there. All the institutions involved have worked in this sense, defining an important, concrete and suitable Agreement to address the issue ”.
The Plan at the center of today's work at the Hunting Show saw the establishment of a technical group by the institutions concerned, extended to include a representative of the Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie, to determine, coordinate and verify intervention initiatives to limit the number of the leaders.
In the absence of specific interventions, the number of deer is destined to double in a five-year period, with consequent further subtraction of resources and fodder for livestock activities essential to the continuation of human and agricultural activities in Cansiglio, while the possibility of "collapse health ”of the deer population, as has already happened in other similar situations, which would lead to the“ natural ”decimation of the animals and possible veterinary problems for the remaining species, including those for income.
To achieve this result, ordinary sampling plans in neighboring hunting areas will be strengthened, both in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
If these initiatives are not sufficient, it will be possible to activate control interventions also within the state-owned area, exclusively using institutional personnel (forest police). According to the technicians, a correct balance could be achieved by containing deer around 1000 - 1.500 units.
“Basically - concluded Stival - our goal is to lend a hand to natural balances so that they are not compromised, in an area where natural resources and forest cultivation, pasture and valuable animal husbandry, cattle and sheep coexist”.
