Devastated orchards and vegetable crops in San Quirico and San Lorenzo a Moriano. Estimated several thousand euros of damages. Furious farmers hit by night raids. Francesco Ciarrocchi, Provincial Director of Coldiretti: "Wild boar epidemic: ad hoc interventions are needed for emergency."
New wild boar raids devastate orchards and vegetable crops between San Quirico and San Lorenzo a Moriano.
Wild boar emergency is again for agriculture in Lucca, once again unfortunate protagonist of the nocturnal raids of real herds of wild boars that in a couple of nights have destroyed entire crops of vegetables and compromised the production of apples, pears and peaches of two companies . The damages are estimated at a few thousand euros.
Coldiretti (info on www.lucca.coldiretti.it), who for some time had reported the strong criticality and the supernumerary of wild boars in Lucca, speaks of "wild boar epidemic - as explained by Francesco Ciarrocchi, Provincial Director of Coldiretti - the problem is under the eyes of everything, and not just the insiders. The wild boars, besides being many, too many, compromise the balance of the territory. There are other alternative techniques to killing that allow wild boars to be kept within suitable areas, but today the situation would make them ineffective. It is an emergency phase, and emergency interventions are needed. Unfortunately, they can no longer find food in the woods, and are forced to go beyond the area where they usually live ".
And there is a controversy with the WWF which had contested the emergency measures of the Province of Lucca, after the unauthorized trips of some wild boars near the center, with targeted killing along the Serchio. “The intervention of the WWF is - explains Ciarrocchi - is in our opinion out of place. There is a regional law that has been widely shared and which also authorizes culling in emergency situations. The wild boar must live in suitable areas, and not where it is not compatible for a whole series of reasons such as the presence of agriculture or urban centers ”.
Coldiretti confirms all his support for the Province of Lucca: “The Province of Lucca - continues Ciarrocchi - has acted with full knowledge of the facts, and has done well. In this case, killing is a necessary intervention. And he has all our support ”.
The farmers who suffered the damage and who had whole days of work torn off in a couple of nights were furious. "The wild boars aren't there? Am I fantasy? - comments one of the two farmers affected by the fury of the wild boars - one even drowned in one of the canals near the fields. They pulled up the roots, dug up and ate everything. He really likes carrots. I had a field full of them, now there are only the remains of their night feast ”.
