Cuneo: At the Parco Fluviale di Cuneo a bird ringing campaign with a study conducted by Luca Giraudo on periodic catches between March and November.
The Gesso and Stura River Park is promoting a scientific study of the ringing of local and migratory avifauna in the area that runs along the Gesso stream, near the Mellana di Boves hamlet.
The study will be conducted by an expert bird ringer, Luca Giraudo, and provides for a series of periodic catches between March and November, on a monthly basis. Special nets called "mist-nets" will be used, that is, fog nets, transparent and deformable so as not to be identified by the birds, which will remain trapped there without suffering any damage.
To this end, park users and residents are advised that special nets will be placed for catching birds and that interventions will also be carried out in the evening and at night. It will therefore be advisable not to be alarmed if you see trapped birds
The animals thus captured will soon be removed from the nets, weighed, examined and provided with an identification ring with a unique alphanumeric code and, therefore, released; the size of the ring is minimal, comparable to that of a wristwatch on a man.
The operations are quite delicate and therefore in order to carry out this activity a license issued by ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) is required, which certifies the ability acquired by the operator to free the animals captured from the net without injuring them, to identify its species and estimate its age and sex.
The study in the Gesso and Stura River Park, currently in the initial phase, will also continue in the coming years in order to increase knowledge on the species present permanently or temporarily in the area.
