RWS Evolution Green Hunting Cartridges: "This cartridge can do everything the others pride themselves on." This is the words of one of the hunters who were invited to test a lead-free bullet cartridge last year.
This cartridge is truly a last generation tool, because it is made with technologies and materials that try to remain as faithful as possible to the ballistic performance of lead cartridges. The ammunition we are talking about is called RWS Evolution Green, or the green and ecological evolution, as it would be translated into Italian. RWS is a prestigious German brand that has been producing bullet ammunition since the 30s.
The brand originates from the Rheinisch-Westfälischen Sprengstoff-Fabriken, factories that in 1931 became the property of Alfred Nobel, inventor of the Nobel Prize. Perhaps not everyone knows that Alfred Nobel was also the inventor of dynamite and that, therefore, the Nobel Prize given every year to prominent figures in many fields (including Peace) was born from an idea of the inventor of a used instrument. even for war purposes.
Fortunately, the RWS Evolution Green cartridge is used for hunting purposes and, more precisely, for hunting large ungulates.
RWS also includes the Rottweil division, which deals with the production of shot cartridges. These German companies are now leaders in the international market for hunting and target shooting ammunition. Their production has been able to follow the changes of the times and the technological evolutions that have accompanied them. Not surprisingly, a part of modern production has been renamed “Evolution”, to indicate the progress made in the field of latest generation cartridges.
The RWS Evolution Green bullet cartridge externally has the same shape as the lead ones, except that there is no trace of lead inside, but tin, a mineral also used in the food industry to produce the famous tinfoil. now replaced by laminated aluminum paper. According to some, tin would be on the list of toxic metals such as lead and cadmium, but others argue that the oral absorption of this material would be negligible. Here, however, we are not talking about food products, but about hunting ammunition.
For the RWS Evolution Green, tin covers the front of the ball, where breakpoints are also created that determine the bullet's ballistic effectiveness.
The blocking of the bullet, during penetration into the target, occurs thanks to a polymer tip made in Speed Tip technology. This technology allows game to be killed on the spot, without having to look for it elsewhere. RWS Evolution Green, in short, causes a "sweet death" in the prey, as happens with the lead ball, which, due to its characteristic of deforming after the shot, hits the animal without tearing it and without causing it a slow death or a agonizing race to a place to die. Compared to the lead bullet, RWS Evolution Green undergoes less deformation at long distances, but the ballistic performance is maintained by the optimized shape of the bullet, the tip and the sharp edge, which guarantee a grazing, energetic and fast trajectory and a perfect entry of the ball, which, with its stable tail, comes out easily and is perfectly traceable. The tin interior of the bullet is coated with nickel plating to avoid problems in the barrels.
RWS Evolution Green has been tested, in the summer escort, in Germany, through one hundred product testers selected among 500 candidate hunters.
The test gave the following results: the greatest knockdowns occurred at a shooting distance between 50 and 100 meters; in 50% of cases the prey fell on the point of impact; in 35% of cases, at an escape distance of 40 meters. During the trial period, the most hunted species were the 20 kg roe deer and the 45 kg wild boar. In 98% of the culls there was an exit hole. The cartridge was mostly used on the .30-06 caliber and on the 8x57IS. RWS Evolution Green is also available for different calibers, namely: 30.R blaser, .300 Win. Mag, .308 Win, 7 mm Rem.Mag, 7x57R, 7 × 64, 7x65R, 8x57JRS, 9,3 × 62, 9,3x74R. The testers who carried out the tests also expressed their opinions. Most of them consider the ballistic performance of RWS Evolution Green to be extremely effective.
Some testers reveal that they have not tested it on larger game and have verified a depreciation, but also the destruction, of the smaller game. The testers also found that the splinters of RWS Evolution Green are more energetic than those of other cartridges and penetrate more easily into the ribs of the animal. Otherwise, compared to other bullet ammunition, RWS Evolution Green does not cause bruising. Some testers conclude with the opinion that the tested bullet is very effective and powerful at short distances and that, despite the shooting accuracy, it should be used for distances not less than 100 meters. Otherwise, the shock wave from the blows in the chest could severely damage the intestines of the game. On the possible limitations of RWS Evolution Green, the testers recommend turning a blind eye, because in reality these are not limits or defects, but the consequences of an inappropriate use of the cartridge, designed specifically for long shots at medium-sized game.
The only drawback of RWS Evolution Green is the price, which is too high compared to traditional cartridges and therefore not very accessible for low-income hunters. However, this negative point could change very soon also thanks to the continuous changes in the market.
