The League for the Abolition of Hunting (LAC) has announced the last sentence of Regional Administrative Court of Liguria. The judges upheld the animal rights appeal against the hunting notwithstanding the starling, to be precise, the levy decided by the Region. According to this appeal, the past seven years the Region itself had never received concrete requests for compensation for damage caused by birds to the agricultural sector.
Furthermore, there would have been no compensated farmer due to the species, in addition to the absence of inspections to carry out the field checks. The animal rights lawyers, then, strongly supported the thesis of the lack of supervision on hunting in derogation. The LAC remains convinced of the fact that the reports for damage from transfers have come from the owners of hunting license to get the green light.
The appeal was filed against the regional resolution of 16 June last and against the opinion of ISPRA a month earlier. According to the judges, the transfer can be authorized when mandatory conditions are present, including the need to avoid serious damage to agriculture. The damage shown to the olive sector is certified by the University of Genoa (15.500-18800 kilos of olives to be precise) was therefore judged modest.
