Alghero, wild boar invasion, Park: new selective reduction
ALGHERO - The operational meeting for the start of the second wild boar reduction campaign in the area pertaining to the Porto Conte Regional Park is scheduled for next Monday 30 August at Casa Gioiosa. As usual, the technical representatives of the administrations responsible for wildlife management and who collaborate with the Park Authority on the wild boar reduction plan will be present at the meeting.
A plan launched last year by the previous management led by former president Antonello Usai who had taken the problem head on, obtaining the active collaboration of the Sardinia Forestry Authority, the Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps, the Province of Sassari and the extraordinary contribution of 'Regional Department of Environmental Defense.
Between March and April 2009, after a census by the University of Sassari Department of Zoology, about 160 wild boars were killed. "In protected areas, the reduction of wild boars is an ordinary and scheduled operation annually - explains the director of the Porto Conte Park Vittorio Gazale - these animals in fact have a fair rate of reproduction and managing their number becomes essential to safeguard the endemic plant species and the flora of our territory as a whole. Furthermore, since the Porto Conte area does not offer much from a trophic point of view (water and food), these animals invade the appoderated areas producing the well-known damage to crops ". Not to mention the dangers to road traffic due to the sudden crossings of ungulates.
"In agreement with the Anas and the Province of Sassari - continues the Director Gazale - interventions were carried out on the road arteries, installing special and functional signs to warn motorists to proceed with caution and also refractive bollards preparatory to avoiding crossing of animals. Some results have been obtained, at least on the basis of the number of accidents that have decreased, but unfortunately the problem of wild boars is complex and of national importance. As a Park Authority, however, we are evaluating all the solutions allowed by national and community regulations on the subject of wild boar management. During the operational meeting on Monday we will also talk about the Fertilia episode and the impromptu invasion in the heart of the urban area. “We will carefully evaluate with the bodies, in this specific case, competent to deal with the emergency, ie the Province of Sassari and the Forestry Corps - concludes the Manager of the Porto Conte Park - and we will provide our technical and scientific support.
The Park Authority, however, will presumably start the usual planned reduction campaign by September and for this we count on the collaboration of the inhabitants of the areas adjacent to the park and of the township committees that we plan to meet shortly to make them participate in the activity that we intend to carry out. .
