Hunting in Italy - The Environment Commission certifies compliance with thecommunity rules in the regional hunting calendars.
The response of Commissioner Janez Potocnik to the question by MEP Zanoni (IdV) on the "serious threats to the conservation of wild birds" clears the field of catastrophic interpretations and makes it clear how pretext the petitioners' appeals against the regional hunting calendars are.
"The Commission has not received any elements confirming the incompatibility with the directive of seasonal and daily game bags established by the Italian regions for the various huntable species" and "there appears to be no overlap between the hunting periods and the periods of reproduction and pre-nuptial migration ". With these two phrases, the President of the European Commission for the Environment Janez Potocnik has definitively made it clear that hunting in Italy today is completely regular, does not represent a risk for wild birds and fully respects the Community regulations on the subject. According to the CNCN (National Hunting and Nature Committee), the European clarification also confirms the work of the TAR (Regional Administrative Court), who have rejected the numerous appeals presented by animal welfare associations against the hunting calendars, which are confirmed as effective wildlife management tools. and also corrected according to the EU.
European Commissioner Potocnik had been called into question by MEP Andrea Zanoni with a written question in which he denounced "serious violations of Directive 2009/147 / EC due to the hunting calendars - 2012/2013 season - of the Italian regions and Italian law n. 157/92 on hunting "and asked the Commission" what measures and procedures does it intend to take against Italy given the blatant and repeated violation of the fundamental principles of protection of birds established by Directive 2009/147 / EC? "
Well the answer arrived, which transformed Zanoni's action into an own goal, clears the field of any doubt about the regularity of hunting in Italy and the correctness of the hunting calendars drawn up by the Regions.
The response of the European Commission, which arrived on 15 October last, is among the official acts of the European Union's environmental management body but strangely it has had little echo in Italy. A clear stance, which - according to the CNCN - should definitely reassure even the animal rights activists of our home, called to focus more on the destruction of habitats by far more dangerous interests than regular hunting activities which, by now, are certified, in Italy is perfectly in tune with the strict European criteria for the conservation of wildlife.
