Fauna: Modena, the damage caused by wolves to farms, the Province announces the data on compensation for damages in 2013.
In 2013, the compensation of the Province to breeders for damage due to predatory attacks, especially from wolves and dogs beyond the control of the owners, amounted to over ten thousand euros. To these costs are added the resources of over 12 thousand euros to provide material for the prevention of attacks (fences, bollards and Maremma dogs) to all breeders who have made a request. The data were provided by Luca Gozzoli, provincial councilor for wildlife policies, responding in the Provincial Council, on Wednesday 11 December, to a question from Dante Mazzi and Claudia Severi (Pdl) on the damage to farms caused by the wolf. Also in 2013, predatory attacks resulted in the killing of 40 sheep, six lambs, nine rams, ten goats, one heifer and one foal; the episodes occurred above all in the area of Pavullo and Riolunato, but the wolf sightings, underlined Gozzoli, “concern various areas of the mountain with great concern on the part of farmers.
The Province, in addition to compensating for the damage, undertakes to provide the threatened farms free of charge with material useful for prevention, including Maremma dogs which are considered the most effective method for safeguarding livestock. So far we have satisfied all the requests received ». The Province recently assigned Maremma puppies to three breeding farms in S. Michele del Mucchietti and Pavullo, as well as acoustic deterrents, and electrified performances. And for the next year the Province will be able to count on a fund equal to 165 thousand euros, made available by the Region, to compensate for damages and for the prevention of wildlife, including wolves.
During the discussion, Mazzi spoke of “a clear reversal of the trend by the Province with respect to the underestimation of the problem in recent years. Finally we take note of the problem and listen to the reasons of the breeders ».
