The Veneto Region is alongside the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills to counter the increase of wild boars in the park itself, in the province of Padua. There Regional Council in fact, it approved a resolution, on the proposal of the Councilor for the Territory and Hunting Cristiano Corazzari, with which a contribution of 200 thousand euros is paid to the Park Authority for interventions to contain wild boar populations for the year 2021. Over the years, the interventions for the containment of wild boars have been numerous and diversified: as the species proliferated, the damage caused both to the natural environment and to the anthropic one increased, to which is also added a significant risk to public safety linked to crossing roads during night travel.
The damage caused by wild boars to agricultural crops, the natural environment and road safety have become increasingly significant, thus pushing the Veneto Region to contribute to containment initiatives of the wild boar populations in the Euganean Hills Regional Park with the allocation of specific resources. Numerous monitoring and containment initiatives have taken place over the years, including through the signing of special agreements with the Province of Padua, the State Forestry Corps and with the National Institute for Wild Fauna (now ISPRA, Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research). The operations undertaken mainly resulted in the management of a certain number of mobile self-springing traps (manhole covers), suitable for the capture of wild boars for which the Park Authority subsequently formed its own team of employees.
Over time, night shooting operations from fixed stalking have also been introduced, which have been flanked by, from April 2012, even nocturnal research actions through the use of infrared camera and spotlight. Given the good results obtained, therefore, always with a view to strengthening the activity relating to direct culling, the Park has selected over the years, through special courses (in accordance with the provisions of the Ministry of the Environment on indications from ISPRA), employees who cover the role of "selecontrollers" to support the institutional staff in carrying out the abatement operations.
“The damage caused by wild boars to agricultural crops and the natural environment and road safety - said Councilor Corazzari - has become increasingly significant. Funds have been allocated to prevent the number of wild boars in the Park from growing further to strengthen the containment actions of wild boars implemented in recent years. It is important to guarantee and protect a balance of sustainability and safeguarding the territory and its agricultural vocation ”.
