Cia-Italian Farmers Calabria South communicates its adhesion and support to the protest demonstration for the damage caused by boars to agricultural crops organized for Thursday 30 September at the Prefecture of Vibo Valentia. Cia Calabria Sud, fully sharing the reasons that led the farmers, now exasperated, to call the umpteenth protest demonstration reminds that the damage problem was born when, in order to satisfy the playful requests coming from the hunting world, repeated immission campaigns were carried out with an allochthonous species, having high dimensions and prolificacy even in territories where the boar never existed.
The damage that this "alien" animal causes with its nocturnal raids not only to crops but also to the environment are incalculable. Wild boars destroy all the fauna that nests on the ground; several species are disappearing or have already disappeared. "We are in an advanced state of emergency and the damage has not only economic, social and environmental relevance but also health (for the dangerous outbreaks of diseases communicable to other animals and humans they carry) and public safety - explains the president Nicola Monteleone -. The high number is pushing these animals to inhabited centers in search of food, just read the press agencies daily that report their presence even during the day from mountain villages to marinades ".
For years, Cia has been denouncing the various institutional levels (State, Regions, Provinces, Prefectures, Parks, etc.) the excessive weight of these harmful wild animals on the agricultural system and on the social fabric of rural areas, asking politics and governments to enable farmers to reap the fruit of their sowing and their efforts. Years in which tables and meetings have been called several times, always promising interventions, even extraordinary ones, which punctually never arrived. The situation is serious, unsustainable and not governed, there are accidents every day.
The measures adopted so far are proving to be ineffective, we cannot rely on it alone selection plan that the Calabria Region has put in place in patches without any concrete result, given the speed of reproduction that these animals have. Among the various requests made, according to Cia Calabria Sud it is now urgent to intervene for eradicate this species in agricultural areas; implement the annual rotation of the teams in the hunting areas and authorize the self-defense of farmers who, equipped with rifle port and hunting license, can kill wild boars in own funds, something very different from the selector courses for owners and tenants of funds that the Region is putting in place and which are used for selection hunting. "The answers were evasive! Inappropriate insights! Immediate extraordinary interventions are needed - continues the president Monteleone -.
We were told to fence off the fields and let the wild boars roam and continue to multiply even where historically they had never seen each other. Hunters, a sporting category, have been entrusted with the task of facing such a complex situation. If today we are forced to talk about an emergency, it means that the management and hunting system implemented so far have been ineffective, they have failed! therefore we must have the courage to make substantial changes to the current hunting system, such measures may be unpopular to some, but we believe that food and physical safety of people are always a step higher! since the situation has now got out of hand. The time has come to state that palliatives are useless ”.
