In Saint-Denis, (La Plau locality), a small village in the Aosta Valley, the Gran Forno festival is held every year at the end of December or early January.
On this day the inhabitants gather around the old common oven of the village, recently renovated, in which about 250 loaves of bread are baked.
The work begins in the morning when the dough is prepared, the oven is heated and the loaves are finally baked on long wooden boards. There are two batches: one in the morning the other in the afternoon and the evening ends with a great bingo.
From the early hours of the morning, the volunteers of the pro loco will start preparing the dough for the "pan Ner" at the pastry room of the atelier du monde agricultural in Plau; later, after rising, they will prepare the loaves and proceed with cooking the pan ner in the wood-burning oven of Plau fino.
There will be 2 or 3 supplies during the day (about 100 loaves each).
From the afternoon we will proceed with the sale of breads and in the evening tourists and residents will be able to try to bake their products in the fractional oven. In the evening there will be dinner at the restaurant Il Caminetto di Semon with a charity raffle. In case of snow there will also be a small torchlight procession open to all.
