Hunting and Fauna: Bergamo, hare is hunted on the runways of the Orio al Serio airport; 70 operators at work at the airport to capture the hares that proliferate in the grassy areas between the runways.
Also this year the battle for the capture of the hares that populate the runways of the Bergamo - Orio al Serio airport was repeated; on the morning of last Sunday, June 23, the men of the Fish-Hunting Unit of the Provincial Police of Bergamo coordinated a capture operation aimed at the hares that populate and proliferate in the grassy area of the grounds between the airport runways. The staff of the Hunting Territorial Area of the Bergamo Plain based in Caravaggio and the volunteer hunting guards lend a hand to the agents of the Provincial Police. As every year, this operation was specifically requested by Sacbo, in compliance with ENAC regulations regarding the prevention of possible accidents caused by wildlife by intervening precisely with the removal of wild animals from the areas affected by the movement of aircraft; in addition, the work carried out is also useful for setting up the construction site for the reconstruction of the runway scheduled for next September.
Seventy are the authorized operators who, on Sunday morning, at 8.30 am, went into action by installing special trapping nets towards which the hares were pushed with artfully produced sounds and noises; the operation ended at about 11.00 with the capture of six specimens of hare which were then released in the repopulation areas of the Bergamo plain following the affixing of an ATC Pianura Bergamasca identification plate useful for checking their future displacements.
The significantly reduced number of hares captured confirms the achievement of the objective of a progressive containment of the population of these wild animals in the grassy areas of the airport grounds.
