Tough clash between the Region and the Province on the controversial issue of the damage caused by the excessive proliferation of wild boars to agriculture, compensation for damages and the measures taken to limit them, including killing.
Among the main protagonists of the clash there is the president of the Province, Leonardo Marras, who harshly attacks the Region, in particular the regional councilor for agriculture, Gianni Salvadori, on the issue of the containment of ungulates, stating "It is enough to unload on us responsibility that they are yours alone ".
Marras's statement is a reply to Salvadori's considerations of recent days with which the commissioner urged the provinces and the ATCs to hurry up in adopting the necessary measures to decrease the density of the wild boar population.
Marras then harshly continues, "Seen from Florence, the problem of damage caused by wild boars to agriculture may seem an "exotic" topic on which to practice easy-to-grasp proclamations. Seen from our territory, however, it is a very serious question, to face which we need perseverance and common sense ”.
Marras continues, "In Florence, they make a mistake, aimed at recalling the provinces and territorial areas of hunting. Here we are doing everything in our power to eradicate wild boars from unsuitable areas and limit their total number, naturally to the current regional legislation ".
The current legislation in fact on the one hand provides for new intervention tools, already used by some provinces including Grosseto, but on the other hand, the same legislation provides for the mandatory nature of ISPRA's opinions in the adoption of extraordinary plans for the containment of species; the two sides of the coin slow down the adoption of the necessary interventions and at the same time limit the use of the measure of abatements to counter the problem.
Continuing on the issue he attacks Marras, "To remedy the problem, the province of Grosseto has also signed a protocol with ISPRA to avoid asking for their opinion every time "ecological" containment methods are used., such as catches or other types of intervention. But to organize a hunting trip, which remains the most effective method, we must always ask for prior authorization, so we always work out of time ".
Finally, the president concludes indignantly "This time, therefore, we do not accept the usual formal notice of the Provinces and the ATCs. I therefore invite President Rossi and regional councilor Salvadori to assume their responsibilities, bringing changes to the legislation to the regional council that simplify our lives, allowing us to better protect agricultural activities, which is everyone's goal ".
For Marras in Grosseto the Province did everything possible to resolve the issue; in fact, while before only the Provincial Police intervened to contain the ungulates, currently there are about 1.500 qualified hunters who give their contribution to the solution of the problem.
The president also adds, "We are also developing an extraordinary control plan for ungulates to also enter protected areas, where animals proliferate, and to completely eradicate wild boar from unsuitable areas ".
Marras then makes it known that extraordinary checks on the activity of hunting teams will be carried out throughout the province and in the ATCs in order to achieve the pre-established abatement objectives and therefore limit the damage caused to agriculture as much as possible.
