Hunting in South Tyrol. Let's see in detail how to obtain the certificate of qualification for hunting necessary to exercise the hunting in South Tyrol; It is essential to pass the hunting exam to which only people who have reached the age of 18 are admitted.
The hunting exam consists of a theoretical test (written and oral exam) aimed at ascertaining the candidate's knowledge of local wildlife / ecology, hunting legislation, hunting weapons as well as nature protection / hunting ethics; a practical shooting test (with bullet and shot ammunition); the certificate on the attendance of a training internship sustained in South Tyrol lasting 50 hours OR of a course for neo-hunters lasting three days; finally, a certificate of participation in a first aid course lasting at least 4 hours.

The theory exam and the practical shooting test take place several times a year and are organized by the hunting and fishing office. With the certificate of qualification to practice hunting, it is possible to ask for the issue of the firearms license for hunting use at the competent Carabinieri station. This is a prerequisite for applying for a hunting permit.
Important notes:
- The dates and terms of registration for the hunting exam are published constantly.
- The exam dates for individual candidates are published exclusively on the web page as well as on the notice board of the Province and replace the written invitations to all effects.
- For the renunciation of conscientious objector, a specific declaration must be sent.
- Those who have taken a hunting exam outside the province of Bolzano can obtain the certificate of qualification to practice hunting, as prescribed in South Tyrol, by taking a supplementary exam.
Registration for the hunting exam. In order to take the hunting exam, the candidate must register by the deadline set for the exam dates set; in particular for the current theoretical exam session which runs from 9 May to 13 May 2016 the registration deadline was last 22 March 2016 while for the next one to be held from 11 October to 14 October 2016, the deadline for the registration is August 26, 2016.
Similarly, the candidate must check the dates set for the practical shooting test sessions; please note that all dates can be viewed on the hunting page of the official website of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. Please note that the date and place of the exam for each candidate will be announced exclusively on the web page and on the notice board of the Province. No written communication will be made.
A € 16,00 duty stamp must be affixed to the registration form completed in all its parts; a medical certificate with € 16,00 stamp duty must be attached to the application, if a valid certificate has not already been filed with the hunting and fishing office (candidates who have passed the practical shooting test before 2015 and present themselves at take the theoretical exam do not have to attach the medical certificate).
The medical certificate is issued by the Health Officer on the form provided for the issuance or renewal of the rifle port license for hunting use. This certificate can only be requested after the medical history certificate has been issued by the general practitioner (pursuant to the Decree of the Ministry of Health of 28 April 1998). On the date of the practical shooting test the medical certificate must be valid.
Practical shooting test. Candidates who have passed the theory exam can register for the practical shooting test by March 2, 2016 (the date of the postmark also applies) by means of a specific application with a € 16,00 duty stamp. The first practical shooting test of the year 2016 will be held at the Merano shooting range on March 22nd.
Hunting internship - course for neo-hunters. For the purpose of issuing the certificate of qualification for hunting, the aspiring hunter must attend a traineeship in hunting in South Tyrol or, at his choice, a course for new hunters lasting three days.
The internship in hunting practice is held by hunting agents or hunters trained for this purpose and must include the following activities: census / determination of wild animals; collaboration in the care and improvement of habitats and interventions in favor of wildlife; collaboration in the construction of structures in reserve; evisceration and preparation of slaughtered animals.
The internship period must last at least one month overall within the annual hunting period from 1st May to 15th December. The candidate will draw up a short report on the internship which must be signed by the accompanying person and forwarded to the Hunting and Fishing Office. For the organization of the internship, the candidate must contact the rector of the hunting reserve concerned. The Hunting and Fishing Office takes over this report on at least four delivery dates per year and sends it to the examination board, which assesses it within 30 days of delivery.
As an alternative to the internship in hunting, there is the possibility of attending a course for neo-hunters lasting at least three days at a certified training facility. The relative certificate of attendance must be presented to the hunting and fishing office. The courses for new hunters are offered by the Latemar forest school.
Supplementary examination. Those who have taken an equivalent examination outside the province can obtain the certificate of qualification for hunting by passing an additional examination. The supplementary exam consists of an oral exam on hunting legislation and the wildlife species that are subject to culling planning.
In addition, the candidate must attend an internship in hunting in South Tyrol lasting at least 50 hours or, at his choice, a course for neo-hunters lasting three days. The candidate must also attach a certified copy of the document certifying the achievement of an equivalent hunting exam obtained outside the province of Bolzano to the PDF admission application.
Conscientious objector. Candidates, who are conscientious objectors at the time of submitting their application to the hunting exam, cannot be admitted to the hunting exam as they are prohibited from using and possessing any firearm (law 8 July 1998, n.230) , art.15, paragraph 6). With the modification of this law (art. 15, paragraph 7-ter), however, objectors placed on leave for five years, can be admitted to the hunting examination after renouncing the "status of objector" by means of an irrevocable declaration to be forwarded to the National Office for the Civil Service in Rome (form available on the Internet). A copy of the acceptance communication from the Rome Office must be attached to the application for admission to the exam.
