There are 110 members of the European Parliament who have decided to adopt a resolution to solve the problem of the amendments proposed by Brussels on thepurchase and possession of firearms by hunters and sport shooters. Politicians are part of theParliamentary Intergroup Biodiversity, Hunting and Rurality and they intervened on a topic that causes much discussion. According to these members, the European directive, particularly if we refer to some types of semi-automatic rifles, medical tests and the limit of validity of the license.
The Intergroup said it was in favor of the major traceability of firearms, as desired by the European Commission, underlining at the same time that “registered firearms owned by hunters and sport shooters have never been the problem”. The resolution was commented by the president of the Intergroup, Karl-Heinz Florenz, whose point of view was shared by many MEPs.
As explained by Philip Sagato, general secretary of FACE, work and balanced approach should be commended, not least because unjustified restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms are nothing more than a first victory for the terrorists on the lifestyles and rights of 12 million European hunters and shooters. The resolution was designed to highlight the weaknesses of the proposal.
Brussels was urged to support the principle of subsidiarity for subjects such as minimum age, medical tests and frequency, adopting minimum basic rules for the custody of weapons and ammunition. The debate is also very heated as regards the online sale of weapons. The Intergroup claims that there is no discrimination against specific groups such as hunters and shooters. Finally, a recommendation concerns the adoption of common conversion rules, in order to guarantee the irreversible conversion of automatic firearms.
