In Maremma and in the Agro Romano A life spent hunting, that of the Marquis Franco Sacchetti, who still at the age of eighty, with a gun on his shoulder and dogs at his side, went around his lands in search of quail and woodcock, talking with farmers and fishermen, playing cards with elders and prelates. Written and published in 1950, Ricordi di caccia is a book of great hunting knowledge, of atmospheres, adventures and affections. The portrait of an Italy that no longer exists, outlined in light brushstrokes, faded like an autumn dawn. Thus Ceccarius (Giuseppe Ceccarelli) in the Preface: "Since in these pages (...) the narration is very lively, the anecdote is pleasant, the re-enactment of hunters is happy (...) and we talk about many places around Rome and summaries are given historical notes, the old Romanist can take the field, who also notes with pleasure how the volume brings a not indifferent contribution to the chronicle of the city as regards the sport of hunting; and the chronicle is “la poudre dorée de l'histoire”, as Anatole France used to say ». A golden powder, like face powder, which gives life to history by illuminating its opaque qualities, embellishing its surfaces, setting in motion the mechanisms of a genuine seduction of memory. |
