According to MEP Andrea Zanoni rifles with rifled bore for hunting ungulates, without limitations of cartridges, would be illegal.
"The carbines, shotguns with rifled bore barrels, used in Italy for hunting ungulates are illegal". This was denounced by Andrea Zanoni, IDV MEP and vice president of the “Animal Welfare” Intergroup in the European Parliament, with a question to the European Commission. "These are weapons with no limitations of blows with which massacres are carried out in many Italian regions".
"The Italian law on hunting n.157 / 1992 - recalls Zanoni -, in article 13, allows the use of rifles with rifled bore barrels, without limitations of shots, in clear contrast with the" Habitat "directive and the Convention of Bern which establish that all hunting weapons cannot use more than three shots in total ”. "This is why I ask the European Commission to intervene against the Italian authorities to correct this legislative violation which in practice translates into a gift for hunters who can shoot weapons prohibited throughout Europe".
The content of the Italian hunting law n.157 / 1992, is repeated in the Legislative Decree n.204 / 2010 (article 6 paragraph 6), issued in implementation of directive 2008/51 / EC relating to the control of the acquisition and possession of weapons, in which no limitation of shots is envisaged for rifles with rifled barrel for hunting use in violation of the EU Habitat Directive 92/43 / EEC.
Attachment F of the Presidential Decree n.357 / 97, which transposes the Habitats Directive in Italy, while including among the prohibited hunting means weapons with magazines containing more than two cartridges (plus one in the barrel) does not provide, in case of violation, no sanction for offenders.
