Rural Civilization Caccia Ambiente brought together hunters and breeders in a conference and a procession in Montichiari (BS), to talk about the legislation on animal welfare.
The decision to show in Montichiari was not accidental. But to push them into the "den" of the largest contemporary animalist protest, they were claims across them, often profoundly different from each other. In the procession last night there were in fact entrepreneurs worried about the costly adjustments of pigsties and poultry sheds to the European standards on the welfare of hens and pigs, hunters disappointed by the lack of reform on the hunting law but also a small representation of veterinarians and scholars in favor of experimenting on animals.
To promote the mobilization against what has been renamed the "animalist dogmatism" was the association Rural Civilization, Hunting, Agriculture and Environment. The initiative took place in two moments: after the conference for "a few close friends" at the fair center, in the evening there was space for a much more attended torchlight procession. The procession of just over one hundred and fifty people, opened by some tractors, crossed the streets of the city and landed in the town hall square. Introduced by Enzo Bosio, president of the Rural Civilization association, and by the veterinarian Tino Consoli, the round table was monopolized by Silvio Garattini, director of the Mario Negri institute in Milan.
"The people's rebellion against the use of animals for scientific research is not recent but dates back to 1700 and today there are two groups that feed it - explained Garattini - those pushed by ethics and those who believe they have alternative scientific solutions . But both are wrong, since those who love animals have no right to harness research and those who think there are alternative tools have an anachronistic view: it would be like saying that we can do without the computer ”.
But, more than the debate on animal testing, the people who took to the streets in Montichiari showed themselves more interested in prosaic aspects. "The escalation of the animal rights movement has led to the modification of the rules that risk damaging the livestock sector in a moment of crisis - it was remarked by some speakers on the sidelines of the event - to adapt the cages of laying hens or pigsties to the stringent European rules it risks giving the decisive push to many companies ”.
