Since the beginning of the hunting season, the Province of Perugia has engaged in a promotion campaign for greater safety in hunting.
Precisely as part of the Province's commitment to promote safety in hunting, in the locality of "Poggiomanente" in Umbertide (PG), the roof terraces for wild boar hunting were presented in the presence of the provincial councilor with responsibility for hunting , Franco Granocchia, and the president of the territorial hunting area "Perugia 1", Quartilio Ciofini.
The hunting terraces, we remember, are structures made of wood or metal used to exercise hunting in stalking securely and allowing the best conditions for shooting; in particular, the roof terraces set up by the Province of Perugia are of the fixed and open ladder type.
Recalling the Province's commitment to safety, the councilor Granocchia commented, "At the beginning of the hunting season we promoted training courses aimed at safe hunting, among other things, very popular and effective in terms of the quality of the knowledge imparted ".
The councilor on the roof terraces continues, “The pilot project of the roof terraces built in Poggiomanente is part of this program. A caliber with magnum barrel ammunition becomes deadly even at a distance of one kilometer, with rifles the danger is even greater because they have three kilometers of range. Given the morphological characteristics of our territories, overwhelmingly hilly, with wide open spaces, the use of the roof terrace guarantees great safety, because the blow points towards the ground and does not bounce. So it is a system that greatly increases safety ".
The need for great attention to safety comes from the high density of wild boar hunters in the area. In the Province of Perugia the practice of hunting for boar it is spreading more and more even in the face of the great proliferation of the species; in the province of Perugia alone there are more than 7.500 hunters dedicated to this type of hunting activity divided into 159 teams located in the territories of the ATC Perugia 1 and Perugia 2.
Granocchia further explains “We consider that during the beat hunters stationed may not leave their position for any reason, to avoid the danger of finding themselves in the shooting range of the nearby hunter or being hit by a bounce shot. By virtue of this, the elevated positions, the roof terraces in fact, guarantee better safety and the possibility of firing exploded shots in the direction of the ground, with better visibility ”.
The councilor continues, "Thanks to the roof terrace you can distinguish the shapes of everything that moves around and greatly decreases the risk of unpleasant accidents. Also because the roof terrace it forces the hunter to stand still and we know that it is often the sudden movement of a member of the hunting team that causes the accident ”.
Hoping then that the experimentation of Poggiomanente can spread throughout the rest of the province, says Granocchia, “We count on the experience of hunters to have as much information as possible to understand if this model can be extended to other territories with the same characteristics. The Province invests heavily in safety, so that this sport can be practiced while avoiding risks as much as possible".
The president of ATC Perugia 1, Quartilio Ciofini, specified that the hunters will actively collaborate in the initiative, “For a hunter there is nothing worse than a joke that ends in tragedy. This is why we welcomed the initiative of the Province with a great collaborative spirit ”.
