Stephen Maullu, MEP of Brothers of Italy, commented on the discussion relating to the self-defense, its reform and the criticisms of some parties of the text. Here is what the Honorable Member said about it: “Who connects the issue of legitimate defense to the arms sales he is not only a fool, but also demonstrates that he has not understood anything about the reform currently under discussion in the House.
What we are trying to establish is a sacrosanct principle, that is that linked to the possibility of defending one's family and property from thieves, by criminals, by vagabonds of all kinds. It is not a question of the Far West, but of a sacred and unassailable right. It is completely intolerable that certain members of the left try to exploit the theme of self-defense to launch another absurd attack on weapons as such, only for a sterile ideological motivation.
As shown by a research by Sapienza, the murders committed with weapons legally detained represent only 5% of the total. The connection between the number of murders committed and the weapons held, therefore, it is completely non-existent, just as the link between legitimate defense and the interests of those who produce weapons is non-existent. Who advances hypotheses of this kind is clearly in bad faith, and shows that he does not have the interests of honest Italians at heart ”.
