THEExperimental Zooprophylactic Institute disseminated to Cagliari the updated data on the outbreaks of African swine fever in domestic pigs and moles wild boars in Sardinia. From 2012 to 2017 there were two decreases in both cases, to be precise -75% and -64%. The comparison with the last eight months, on the contrary, has highlighted a reduction of the “domestic” outbreak equal to 90 percentage points. The press conference was organized as part of the eradication of the pathology.
Victory has never been so close, again according to the Institute, and the numbers have also been commented on by the Governor of the island. Francesco Pigliaru spoke of a 40-year story which is finally about to reach its natural conclusion. Now there is only the final push to get rid of the disease for good prevents the sector from developing in a concrete way.
Wild grazing is still a risk factor, but the situation has changed a lot compared to the past, also and above all due to the commitment of the population. In the three-year period 2012-2014 there were 223 outbreaks (74 every year and 6 per month), while in the 2015-2017 three-year period they dropped to just 56 (the annual average is just 19 cases). In the last eight months, that is to say from August to March last, finally, there have been only three outbreaks.
