A new tax? Italy Today he explored the possible introduction of a tax that should concern nothing less than the meat. The hypothesis is being examined by the European Parliament, after that three MEPs have suggested this fiscal novelty. What is it about exactly? The politicians in question are part of the Greens and the Socialists and Democrats. The goal would be to tax the product for safeguard the environment and cover the costs incurred for livestock farming.
We are talking about a tax of 25%, in order to increase the prices of pork, chicken and other poultry. In the case of pork, in fact, every hundred grams there would be an increase of 36 cents, while the increase would reach 47 cents for cattle. The rate should be applied gradually, starting in 2021 and aiming for 2030 as at the final moment for the desired revenue (about 30 billion euros per year).
The accumulated money, then, would cover 100% of the environmental costs that MEPs continue to impute to zootechnical companies, specifically to carbon dioxide emissions and nitrates. The scenario is not at all encouraging for the agri-food sector, given that by 2030, beef is set to collapse by 67% as regards consumption (-57% for pork).
