Wild boar hunting in Sardinia, the health checks campaign by the ASL begins with training sessions for hunters; the first took place on 25 October 2014 in Ozieri (SS).
In view of the imminent start of the hunting season for the wild boar hunting, scheduled for 1 November, the Veterinary Service of the ASL of Sassari has planned a series of training and information meetings in the area, in order to sensitize all hunters to respect the health measures to be applied to hunted wild boars. The first meeting was held on the morning of last 25 October 2014, at the veterinary offices of the San Nicola Region in Ozieri, then the meeting took place on 27 October 2014 at 18,30 at the Social Center of the Municipality of Pattada, today 28 October at 18.00 in Bono at the Nassiriya Hall and finally the meeting on 29 October at 18.00 at the Municipal Library of the Municipality of Nulvi. The Local Crisis Unit on African swine fever convened by the Animal Health Veterinary Service of the ASL of Sassari and in which the heads of the Food Hygiene Service, the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sardinia and the Forestry Corps participated, defined all the operating procedures for health checks in the areas within which it is mandatory to regulate the exercise of wild boar hunting, following the confirmed cases of African swine fever.
Companies interested in the exercise of big game in derogation in the restricted area for the wild, which includes the territories of Pattada, Nughedu, Bultei, Anela, Bono, Bottidda and Burgos and in the restricted domestic areas, which include the territories di Nulvi, Tergu, Castelsardo, Sedini, Valledoria, Santa Maria Coghinas, Laerru, Perfugas, Chiaramonti, Martis, Osilo, Sennori, Sorso, Ploaghe, Bulzi, can send a specific request to the Veterinary Service of the local health company of Sassari.
In the last hunting season, a total of 1.126 blood, spleen and diaphragm samples were taken, of which 694 in the areas under health restrictions and where 1.380 hunters operated. The activity of the veterinarians highlighted the presence of 63 cases of seropositivity and 5 cases with positive viruses in the Goceano area, 11 seropositive and 12 positive viruses in the Nulvi area and 11 seropositive wild boars in the Bonorva area.
The controls will also make it possible to exclude the presence of trichinellosis, the cause of important clinical implications for the consumer of any parasitized meat. The maps of the restricted areas and the forms for requesting the derogation will be shown on the ASL website of Sassari aslsassari.it in the coming days.
