64th edition of the Porchetta Festival in Poggio Bustone, in the province of Rieti, on 4 and 5 October 2014.
“The gardens of March are dressed in new colors”, sang Lucio Battisti. But in Poggio Bustone, the town that gave birth to the great singer-songwriter, those same gardens are also filled with aromas and flavors. Yes, this small village in the province of Rieti could only dedicate an open space to the illustrious fellow citizen: and so in the splendid context of the "Giardini di Marzo", the 4th edition of the Festival of Pork. An event born in 1930, also to demonstrate that this delicious pork-based dish is not a prerogative of the Castelli Romani area. Indeed, in these parts the porchetta is prepared following a very particular recipe: the heat of the oven is not distributed evenly, the fennel is not used and great attention is given to the balance of flavors between ground pepper, garlic, rosemary and salt. .
Between music, costume parades and fireworks that will enliven the weekend in Poggio Bustone, the porchetta will be in very good company. The "Penne alla Sanpietrana", a specialty of the S. Pietro fraction of Poggio Bustone, the potatoes of Leonessa and the fried pizza of Montopoli in Sabina will be served all these goodness not only enrich the event dedicated to the protagonist of Poggio Bustone but complete the one that over the years - exactly 13 - has been called the Festival of Festivals.
There will be the 1st competition of cakes for amateurs entitled "Intortiamoci alla sagra". All those who want to participate will have to do their best to make a cake and decorate it. As always, the city will be filled with stands, refreshment points, shows and musical initiatives. There will be stornellatori off the cuff all afternoon along the streets of the town. On Saturday afternoon there will be a band meeting. On the other hand, those who want to dedicate a few more hours to discovering the town and its territory, must absolutely visit the Sanctuary of San Francesco. Yes, because in the summer of 1208 Francis of Assisi arrived in this small town with his first companions Bernardo da Quintavalle, Pietro Cattani, Egidio, Sabatino, Morico, Masseo and Giovanni della Cappella.
In 200 the convent was built with an adjoining church in the northern part of the cloister; between the end of the 300th century and the beginning of the 400th century the church was built and the convent was enlarged, including the basement and the ground floor, while in the 600th century the upper floor was built. But the ancient village is still worthy of note, with its typical medieval structure, with the gothic arched door of the "Buon Giorno" which marked the entrance to the town and the pentagonal tower of the Cassero. The arch of the good day is so called because the "poor man" of Assisi when he arrived in our country said the words "Good morning good people".
For nature lovers, a few kilometers from Poggio Bustone there is the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes.
