The meeting at the Ministry of Health
“The appointment of the three sub-commissioners is good, now we need to act quickly against the invasion of wild boars, starting from the most important areas from a pig-growing point of view, also evaluating the possible establishment of containment barriers. We must intervene to support businesses, there is no more time to waste." This is Coldiretti's comment at the end of today's meeting on the subject of African swine fever-ASF, held at Ministry of Health in the presence of the undersecretaries for Health Marcello Gemmato and for agriculture Patrizio La Pietra, during which the appointment of three sub-commissioners with specific mandates was announced and where some details on the army's intervention for the depopulation of wild boars were also explained.
Support for pig farmers
“Now – claims Coldiretti – it is necessary to provide further resources, and certain times for compensation, for contributions to companies that have suffered indirect damage from the ASF epidemic (MASAF Decree) by extending the period concerned (currently expected until November) at least until April this year with a speedy procedure to support pig farmers who have been in difficulty for too long. We need to provide adequate resources to support farmers in the investments they need to make in farming to improve biosecurity."
Areas with outbreak
“Furthermore, we support the proposal on which we know is being worked on by the European institutions to create an ASF restriction zone with an outbreak of wild boars, to which conditions different from those envisaged for areas with an outbreak of domestic pigs apply. Finally, it is necessary – concludes Coldiretti – to normalize the marketing methods to avoid the speculation that some slaughterhouses are operating”.
