"I'm 5.802 wild boars killed this year in Lombardy thanks to the actions implemented by the Region, 700 more than last year. We continue in the work of bureaucratic simplification, involving the agricultural and hunting world and listening to the territory to contain a problem that is causing enormous damage to Lombard agriculture and which also represents a danger for the safety of people ". This was stated by the Lombard regional councilor for Agriculture, Food and Green Systems, Fabio Rolfi, regarding the proliferation of wild boars in Lombardy.
The Region approved today the "objective management parameters" to which the wildlife-hunting management of wild boar must be aimed in areas classified as suitable for the presence of the species in Lombardy, including regional protected areas. These parameters represent the threshold value of tolerable damage in relation to the ecological needs of the species and those of protection of anthropogenic activities and the environment. It is the last act of the implementation of the Boar Law. "A necessary step to define the abatement objectives and to have more effective tools for the control of ungulates in areas suited to their presence - added Rolfi - "This resolution confirms the technical and scientific approach that we want to have for the management of wild boar and bring it back, in the absence of state indications, to sustainable conditions for the territory ".
The management units already present in the suitable areas have been divided into 'Management Sub-Unit'. In defining the objective management parameters, administrative and environmental data, data relating to the presence and dynamics of the wild boar and data relating to the damage caused by the wild boar to anthropic activities were used (agriculture, traffic accidents). Subsequently, a risk index was created aimed at assessing the relationship between the impacts caused by the species on the regional territory with respect to the management methods currently applied. From the analysis of the data and the processing carried out, the objective management parameters were therefore identified.
"The resolution approved today introduces other important changes involving the whole regional territory: we foresee the possibility of organizing collective hunting trips even jointly between two teams active in neighboring areas and the lowering 10 to 8 of the minimum threshold of hunters present for collective hunting with the hunt method. At night, controlled killing can also take place with the aid of light sources, infrared viewers or thermal cameras. Less bureaucracy and more flexibility to allow more effective interventions to protect the community ”concluded the commissioner Rolfi.
