Encounters with the wild walking through the streets of city of Genoa - as in many other Italian cities - they are no longer a novelty. So much so that the video that in recent days showed a boar cross Corso Montegrappa quietly on the pedestrian crossing "addressed" by a local police officer had at the most snatched a few smiles and jokes. To those who know nature a little better, hunters in the first place, that video in which a wild animal showed a familiarity as a pet with man and with the urban environment did not make people smile at all, because it cannot be considered normal or an acceptable form of coexistence with "nature" the presence of a wild boar in city traffic.
Obviously, this did not seem even to those responsible for regional wildlife surveillance, who in fact ordered its killing after having made sure that its presence did not cause dangers to citizenship. A Christmas story with no happy ending, then? No. More simply, yet another demonstration that something is not going the right way in our country in relations with wildlife, especially the invasive one of which the wild boar represents the most obvious example, which now represents as well as a source of damage to the countryside and farmers also an increasingly important problem for public safety, especially for motorists.
The data released yesterday by the Lombardy Region speak of 803 accidents caused by wildlife in 2018. And it is not even the most affected region, in addition to the fact that there are many accidents not reported due to the difficulties or the impossibility of obtain compensation. We believe that the time has come for national politics and the legislator to take seriously the problem, as many local administrators already do with a thousand difficulties and red tape. The first to thank will be the wild ones.
