Stephen Privitera, former president of Sicilian Free Hunters, decided to write a letter to the Regional Councilor for Agriculture, Antonello Cracolici. The text was reproduced in full by the National Hunters Union. The occasion is that of the drafting of the hunting calendar relating to the 2017-2018 season: there is no shortage of criticisms, as happens on time, especially with regard to hunting times, the species that can be traced and the number of animals that can be killed.
The councilor's proposal was judged satisfactory, taking into account the opinion of ISPRA and the dynamics of wild populations, although two aspects should be better evaluated and corrected. First of all, the a priori fixation of three pre-opening days, as well as the closure of the hunting activity on January 31, 2018 instead of February 10. The pre-opening is about turtledoves, wood pigeons and wild rabbits: the problems are of a managerial nature, given that the concentration of hunters will increase the hunting density, without forgetting the incompatibility with work and personal needs.
The proposal is to choose these days according to the needs, so as to dilute the impact of the hunters in the period 2 16-September. Another request is to increase the pre-opening days by 3 to 5 to have a greater margin of choice. The closure of February 10, then, should concern wood pigeons, corvids and foxes, as foreseen by the "Comunitaria" of 2010 which set this postponement.
