Hunting and Fauna: “Too many ungulates in Tuscany”, this is the alarm raised by farmers and institutions during the conference on wildlife management at the Georgofili Academy.
Too many ungulates in Tuscany. According to what emerged from the conference on “Agriculture and rational management of wildlife” held this morning at the Accademia dei Georgofili, there are 350 ungulates in Tuscany. A number that - according to the interventions of experts, representatives of institutions and trade associations - has forced many farmers to lay out kilometers and kilometers of wire mesh to protect crops and which jeopardizes the environmental balance of the whole region causing huge problems also from the hydrogeological and forest point of view.
The alarm cry was picked up by the councilor for agriculture and forests of the Tuscany Region, Gianni Salvadori, who drew conclusions after the interventions of representatives of the academic world, Mipaf, associations and local institutions. The discrepancies between national and regional legislation and the role of Ispra, which, according to the operators, causes the institutional impasse and makes it impossible to carry out the necessary interventions, in due time, by the ATC and the Provinces.
Among the examples cited during the works, the case of a road accident involving a young woman and a deer. The public body - it was reported by the provincial councilor for agriculture of Siena, and representative of UPI, Anna Maria Betti - had to have the deer hospitalized at the expense of the taxpayer, while the young woman lost an arm and did not right to any compensation because the road bore the prescribed signs.
Councilor Salvadori defined the case an "emblematic example of the unacceptable contradictions that occur" and reiterated the need to recover "realism" and "common sense". He also reported that he had already written to the coordinator of the regional councilors for agriculture to bring the topic concerning the Ispra guidelines on ungulates to the State-Regions Conference. A similar letter had already been sent to ministers Clini and Catania.
"We cannot remain blocked - Salvadori stressed - and Ispra has not given answers to the Tuscany Region, on anything, for many years now. On the other hand, Ispra must respect the laws and since I know that the issue of ungulates will be central to the next hunting plan I want to have certainties from the national level. The Ministry and the Presidency of the Council, in agreement with the Regions, must identify the methods that allow the protection of the territory, the environment and agriculture ”.
