The Councilor for Agriculture of the The Tuscan Regional Authority, Marco Remaschi, sent a letter to the Minister of the Environment, Gianluca Galletti, requesting the formal implementation of the Piano Lupo in the territory. The attacks reported in this region are more than 1500 (the figure refers to the last three years) and there are many farmers who they stopped reporting the incidents. Despite the financial investments for fences and guard dogs, as well as the reimbursement of the damage suffered, the situation has never improved.
In recent months, the problem has gotten worse and several companies have even been forced to stop the activity, consequently an exemption for the Ministry of the Environment was requested the killing of 5% of wolves present in the regional territory. Among other things, 500 thousand euros were identified in the financial statements for the compensation for 2016. The commissioner also spoke of the dangerous spread of poaching phenomena which concern wolves, especially in hilly and mountain areas.
The approval of the national plan cannot be expected any longer: the abatements will have to be focused on specimens targeting flocks of sheep and cattle. As Remaschi explained, it is a question of implementing what is indicated in the national document, applying all the provisions of the Community directives.
