Hunting: Verona, the wild boar control plan on the provincial territory was successful thanks to the help of hunters.
The Province of Verona announces the data relating to the control plan of the wild boar species implemented during the past Hunting Season; 528 animals killed and much of the credit according to the vice president of the province and councilor for hunting, Fabio Venturi, is of the hunters: "They are giving us a big hand in containing these animals, devastating for our valuable crops".
The data provided by the Province concern the territory of the hilly and mountainous area of Verona during the opening period of the wild boar hunting, from November to January 31; there is a greater effectiveness of the control plan compared to the previous hunting season in which 347 animals were killed. According to Ivano Confortini, wildlife technician of the Province, the reasons are various, "The hunting techniques of both the dogs used and the quality of the collection have certainly improved. Whether wild boars have also increased compared to the previous year and therefore there is more availability of prey, we cannot say. We also lack checks on the shot, the technique of hunting with the limiere dog who digs the wild boar, even if there is no doubt that the outputs have increased. During 2012, around seventy animals were taken in the period of closure of the hunt when only control is done ”.
Hunters have complained about the fact that only one slaughterhouse is authorized for the treatment of the meat of slaughtered animals, the one located in Cavalo di Fumane; according to the hunters this would be one of the reasons that would discourage many colleagues who would like to participate in this type of hunting. Venturi replies to the hunters, “The legislation on processing centers is in fact severe and requires heavy investments for those who decide to embark on the enterprise. We should meet a more simplified legislation and encourage the adhesions of other slaughterhouses ".
For the vice president of the province and councilor for hunting Fabio Venturi the numbers of withdrawals relating to the last hunting season are considerable “and this is due to the hunters who are giving us a big hand in containing these animals which are devastating for our valuable crops. The Province has not remained idle in the face of this emergency and as the only Venetian province to have authorized wild boar hunting, it continues its work with the control plan ”.
Furthermore Venturi agrees with the regional councilor Franco Manzato regarding the fact that wild boars would be an economic resource and he explains, “As for the opportunities for processing meat, it is true that a single slaughterhouse for the whole province is very little. We have invited and made meetings with other butchers presenting the possibility, but we cannot force anyone and we also take advantage of the pages of the newspaper to invite those who would like to make themselves available to come forward: the more transformation points there will be, the more incentives the hunters will also be to participate to withdrawals and greater economic repercussions there will also be on local activities ".
