Treviso, Antirabic prophylaxis: In Ulss 9 there will be 50 dogs to be subjected and compulsory prophylaxis, under penalty of heavy fines.
There are about 50, of which 35.000 are regularly registered, i dogs to be vaccinated in the Ulss 9 territory to prevent the spread of wild rabies. Vaccination prevention is made necessary and mandatory after the appearance of new cases in foxes, in two dogs and in a donkey in the nearby territory of the province of Belluno starting from mid-November 2009. The goal is the full immunization of the animals by January.
Last November 24, a regional ordinance that made the rabies vaccination mandatory for dogs and the optional vaccination for cats and ferrets.
Rabies is a transmissible viral disease that affects wild animals, pets and humans. Even before the onset of symptoms, the rabies virus is present in the saliva of the infected animal and can be transmitted to humans through biting, licking of non-intact skin or mucous membranes.
An animal with rabies can have changes in behavior, for example, wild animals can lose their natural distrust of humans and become aggressive. Movement difficulties, paralysis and eventually death can be observed. Given the high lethality that characterizes it, rabies represents a disease with a significant social impact, since there is no therapy after the onset of symptoms.
Pre-exposure and post-exposure vaccine prevention therefore plays a decisive role in the management of the disease in animals and humans. In the event of a bite, it is necessary to wash the wound with abundant soap and water for at least 15 minutes and to go to the emergency room to receive adequate treatment.
Pets should be vaccinated and any abnormal or unusual behavior observed in pets should be reported to the veterinarian. In this phase, the Veneto Region and the Ministry of Health have ordered the prohibition of driving dogs, even if vaccinated, in agro-forestry-pastoral areas for areas at risk, including hunting and related operations. For the Ulss Company of Treviso, the areas fall within the Municipalities of Cimadolmo, Fontanelle, Mansuè, Ormelle, Portobuffolè.
The public veterinary service will make use of the support of the Order of Veterinary Doctors of the province of Treviso and the contribution of freelancers present in the area. It is possible to vaccinate your dog by contacting public veterinarians (with a contribution of 5 euros), in the points made available by the Municipalities, to freelance veterinarians in agreement (with a controlled contribution of 20 euros) and to freelance veterinarians ( with a controlled contribution of 30 euros).
The vaccine, safe and with very rare side effects, will also be carried out on animals not yet registered in the canine registry. The latter will be vaccinated, however, after identification by affixing a subcutaneous microchip, and entered in the regional database, at all vaccination points of the company as well as in the clinics of veterinary doctors affiliated with the canine registry; the contribution that will need to be paid in this case will be 13,26 euros at the ULSS veterinarians and 16 euros at the affiliated facilities.
"Even without triggering unnecessary alarmism - declares Pier Paolo Faronato, health director of Ulss 9 -, the concrete possibility that this disease, reappearing after many years, affects men and pets requires widespread and effective action to counter its spread, even to prevent it from radiating to other areas of the country where it would be almost impossible to control it.
In this direction, the collaboration with freelance veterinarians represents a precious moment of synergy in the fight against infectious diseases and an opportunity to fulfill such a demanding effort in such a short time ”.
