With an innovative project in Lunigiana, the Ms 13 Hunting Territorial Area invests in the breeding of hares to be entrusted to farmers.
In fact, the ATC Ms 13 project envisages giving large farmers the task of raising hares on behalf of ATC in order to cut costs and create new economic and employment opportunities in the area. The announcement will take place within a few weeks. Valerio Poi, President of the Atc 13 Management Committee: “We will guarantee the farmer the purchase of the heads”. Raising hares can become a job.
The idea came to the Management Committee of the Territorial Area of Hunting Ms 13 which decided to experience, among the first in Italy, the breeding of hares to be used for restocking.
In practice, to avoid buying dozens and dozens of hares from one or more farms with a considerable waste of economic resources, the ATC has decided to "invest" in a completely innovative and original project: "we make hares to be born in Lunigiana and there - Valerio Poi, Chairman of the Management Committee launches the initiative - we will raise them with the help of farmers. There are margins to create new jobs in a sector that our province is completely devoid of. Restocking hares will guarantee a large, native and healthy population ".
The hares born in Lunigiana will first be "raised" in cages and then move into large acclimatization enclosures where they will find all the optimal conditions to grow and become independent (3-5 months).
Until now, adult hares and hares mostly came from farms in Northern and Central Italy: "the goal is multiple: to reduce the costs for the purchase of hares that the ATC supports every year for seasonal restocking activities - analyzes Poi again -, to have quality animals and to minimize, in addition to the related health risks, also the negative effects of transport and translocation stress to which hares from other territories are subjected, forced to travel hundreds of kilometers in very narrow cages before arriving and being released ".
From the hare supply chain, therefore, in times of crisis, an economic and employment opportunity that winks at farmers called to put on the plate, together with agricultural land, passion and availability.
A notice will be published within a few weeks with directions and all the specifics to participate in which will be linked to a conference to be held at the Castle of Terrarossa on 11 February.
The project provides, upon completion of the course, the creation of a production disciplinary to which local breeders must comply who intend to provide the ATC 13 hares to be used for restocking.
The ATC should save in the first five years of operation, according to projections, about 10% on purchase costs. “The ATC undertakes - explains Poi - to guarantee the breeder the purchase of a certain number of heads for a certain number of years and at a pre-established price. Therefore, not just an operation aimed at reducing management costs, but a two-way operation: creating the conditions to breed on the spot, with local forces and resources, a very particular species such as the hare ”.
According to a first approximate estimate of the Management Committee the breeding of hares could set in motion a virtuous mechanism precisely for the agricultural sector: "The identikit of the entrepreneur mirrors that of the agricultural entrepreneur - concludes Then - a fundamental role in this project will be played by them".
