The decisions of the European Commission
Now it is necessary to save the thousands of sheep and goats mauled, cows slaughtered and donkeys killed along the entire Peninsula where the presence of the wolf it has multiplied in recent years with the repetition of massacres in farms that have forced the closure of activities and abandonment of the mountain. This is what Coldiretti affirms in reference to the news that the European Commission has opened a public consultation to decide to modify or "make more flexible", the protected species status of the wolf whose concentration in some European regions "has become a real danger for livestock and potentially also for humans” with “the invitation to local and national authorities to act where necessary.
The Italian population of wolves
In Italy there has been a strong increase from north to south of the wolf population, estimated by Ispra in the context of the Life WolfAlps EU project at around 3.300 specimens, 950 in the Alpine regions and almost 2.400 along the rest of the peninsula while the number of sheep has decreased by about 10% in the last five years according to an analysis by Coldiretti. The numbers seem to confirm that the wolf is no longer in danger and - underlines Coldiretti - the real risk today is rather the disappearance of the presence of man from the mountains and inland areas due to the abandonment of thousands of families but also of many young people who laboriously returned to restore lost biodiversity with the recovery of the historic Italian breeds of cows, goats and sheep.
The commitment of shepherds and farmers
Responsibility is needed in the defense of farms, shepherds and breeders who courageously continue to guard the mountains and guarantee the beauty of the landscape. Without pastures - concludes Coldiretti - the mountains die, the environment deteriorates and landslides and floods threaten the cities. (Source COLDIRETTI).
