In the last weeks, in addition to the damage caused by wild boars, increasingly important, there are major attacks on crops in progress by the pigeons. Confagricoltura Piemonte highlights this, explaining that farmers have sown autumn / winter crops, such as wheat and barley, at a depth of a few centimeters and then they rolled the ground to compact the earth well around the seed: this last precaution, however, does not discourage the birds from digging and picking up the laid seed.
“The damage - the technicians of Piedmont Confagriculture - will be evident in the spillage phase of the seedlings, but from the high activity of these animals, we can already hypothesize heavy crop losses ". The president of Confagricoltura Piemonte Enrico Allasia wrote to the Region and to the provincial services for the protection of wildlife, asking for the activation of a control plan for wild pigeons, both to limit the damage to the crops in this phase and in the perspective of the sowing of spring weed crops and in the subsequent ripening periods, and to eliminate possible vehicles for the diffusion of interspecific pathologies which can affect humans and animals.
"We believe it is essential, given the severity of the attacks and the abnormal proliferation of birds - writes Allasia - that selective localized interventions, aimed at solving the problem by causing as little disturbance as possible to the rest of the wildlife present in the area "(The Province of Biella).
