Cases of illnesses, heart attacks, slips and avalanches that hit hunters were included in the list published by Lac. But these events have nothing to do with the specificity of hunting and cannot be considered hunting accidents. The figure adjusted for hunting accidents stands at 22 deaths against the 35 advertised by the LAC. Mushroom picking caused 53 deaths but no one thinks they want to close it
Rome, 1 February 2011 - Also in this hunting season there have been hunting accidents but with equal punctuality some distortions on the numbers and related alarmist campaigns have arisen: on the LAC (Lega Abolizione Caccia) website there is talk of 35 deaths, but in this data includes deaths due to illnesses, heart attacks, falls and even avalanches, events that have nothing to do with the specificity of the hunting activity. The real figure of the victims, purged of the error of assessment, is in fact 22.
Face Italia (Federcaccia, Anuu Migratoristi, Enalcaccia, Libera Caccia) and the CNCN (National Hunting and Nature Committee) are therefore forced to reply to the LAC which has released a figure on the number of victims of hunting that is unlikely and easily criticized. On the association's website, in the section "Di caccia si muore", there is talk of 35 deaths but already in the first news published to carry out the count the imprecision is clear with the inclusion of events completely unrelated to the hunting activity as such.
According to the annual study carried out by the CNCN, the victims were 22 and not 35, and the same goes for the data on the injured. The LAC declares 74 injured but includes among these illnesses, falls, slips and wasp stings, or unfortunate events but typical of any sport or amateur practice carried out in the open air and not just hunting. Without including these events, the figure is much smaller than 61.
CNCN carried out a research for the calendar year 2010 (from January 1st to December 31st) on the different types of accidents that occurred during the various and more common recreational and sporting activities in the open air.
Just to mention some results of this survey, excluding heart attacks, for example in swimming and bathing there were 127 deaths, 53 deaths occurred during mushroom and truffle picking, 64 in hiking, 31 in skiing and related activities, but no one thinks, of course, of closing the beaches, swimming pools, mushroom picking, ski resorts.
Distorting data is certainly not a constructive and correct way of providing information, but it is by communicating transparently and by doing prevention - activities that CNCN and FACE Italia have been carrying out with various types of initiatives and programs for some time - that we can really increase further the security level.
