Hunting and Fauna: Bologna, a pack of wolves has mauled and a herd of goats in the Gadelle di Porretta area; twenty-two animals killed and partly devoured.
A pack of wolves the other night killed twenty-two goats on a farm in Gadelle, between Capugnano and Castelluccio di Porretta. The flock was owned by the farmer Gilberto Biagi, 65, whose home is about 200 meters from the fence where the sheepfold is. "I didn't worry about dogs barking, they do it every night and if I noticed I wouldn't sleep a minute", says Biagi who at dawn yesterday was faced with an unprecedented massacre for the same location and for others of the Upper Rhine Valley.
“I have seen several wolves circulating in recent times - recalls Biagi -, but an episode like the one in the last few hours had never happened. In 2010 a first goat was slaughtered and in 2011 a second one and evidently in both situations it was a lone wolf to act, but now it takes little to understand how in the last case a rather numerous herd carried out the assault ".
The farmer spreads his arms disconsolately and expresses his concern: "After the first two killings I mounted an electro-welded wire mesh more than a meter and a half high in the fence, I can't build the Berlin Wall ... I'm afraid the wolves will return for complete the raid that caused me damage for sure not less than 6 thousand euros. I proceeded to notify the provincial police and the veterinary service of the ASL for the ritual checks on the fenced area, which is almost 1.500 square meters ".
The story of Gilberto Biagi will be examined as soon as possible by the council of the Alto Reno Union, including the municipalities of Porretta, Granaglione, Lizzano and Camugnano. Its president and mayor from Granaglione, Giuseppe Nanni, comments: “We certainly do not want to cause alarmism, but we are faced with a problem that is growing in size. We intend to point this out to the Province in order to find a resolution because wolves, in packs or solitary, are being seen in the Upper Rhine and are carrying out various assaults on the sheepfolds. We would not want them to prove dangerous and to perpetuate the attitude of protecting animals more than humans ”.
