Even in the Aosta Valley, the Region finds itself compensating hundreds of thousands of euros for damage caused by wildlife, especially for road accidents.
In 2011 alone, the Aosta Valley had to pay 160 thousand euros to compensate for the damage caused to motorists by wild animals, especially roe deer and deer. In this period of crisis, Valle d'Aosta is one of the few Italian regions that still compensates for the damage caused by wildlife to motorists following road accidents; the compensation covers 75% of the damage caused by animals and up to a maximum of 2.500 euros.
The problem obviously affects the whole Region e the animals that are most involved in accidents are mainly roe deer and deer but there is no lack of wild boars and foxes; most of the claims occur statistically in the spring and autumn periods.
On the question, Cristian Chioso of the regional directorate for Flora, Fauna, Hunting and Fishing, explained "The indemnities have been activated since 2002 and in recent years have increased to coincide with the growth in the territory of the roe deer population.".
Continuing, Chioso said, “To combat these increasingly frequent accidents we have installed in various valleys of the reflector systems that reflect the light from car headlights towards the outside of the roadside, dazzling animals approaching the road. A wildlife overpass was then installed in Etroubles to help animals cross the state road ".
They obviously remain present along the roads the well-known danger signs that warn motorists of the probable crossing of wild animals on the roadway which are then added to the whole series of small devices that seem to be giving satisfactory results.
