Hunting and Fauna: in Paganico, in the province of Grosseto, the technical seminar on the theme "Health interactions between wild ungulates and domestic ruminants".
The Wildlife-Hunting Activities Unit - Nature Conservation Service of the Province of Grosseto organizes the technical seminar on the theme “Health interactions between wild ungulates and domestic ruminants”; the meeting will be held next Saturday 8 June 2013 at the Tenuta di Paganico located in Via della Stazione, 10 in Paganico (GR). In the operations of prophylaxis of infectious and parasitic diseases subject to control and eradication plans in farm animals, the knowledge of the natural reserves of the agent and in particular of the role played by wild populations in maintaining the infection / infestation is of particular importance. The main activity of the Tenuta di Paganico has always been zootechnical, with the breeding of Maremmana, Chianina and Limousine cattle, Maremmana horses and Cinta Senese pigs. The cows and bulls - today about 100 heads - live in the wild, in the meadows, in the pastures and in the woods. The contact between income ruminants (cattle) and wild ones (fallow deer, roe deer) is particularly intense as these animals frequently share both the pastures and water them. The health checks on these animals are carried out in collaboration with the Department of Animal Pathology of the Un. of Pisa and showed that the farm is free from tuberculosis, brucellosis, enzootic bovine leukosis, but in recent years there have been reports of paratuberculosis, and cases of BoHV-1 (IBR) infections.
This has led to the need to carry out a study on the possible transmission of diseases between wild and domestic ruminants. The monitoring of the pathologies of wild ungulates subjected to hunting takes on further interest also given the recent cases of diffusion, in some heads of wild boar killed in our Province of the Trichinella, a parasite that can cause serious diseases in humans. We thank the selection hunters of Districts 4 and 33 of the ATC GR6 for their precious collaboration, without which this project would not have been possible.
