Hunting and Fauna: Lombardy, a manual published by the Region for the monitoring of birds and mammals.
“Monitoring of birds and mammals in Lombardy, techniques and methods of detection”, this is the new publication of the General Agriculture Management of the Lombardy Region, which wants to underline how monitoring means conserving and managing. Ultimately, it is a manual that takes stock of bird and mammal monitoring techniques, aiming to meet the needs of those involved in the conservation and management of wildlife.
The implementation of wildlife monitoring, using standardized techniques suited to the eco-ethological characteristics of the various animal species under investigation, is a necessary requirement for planning correct conservation and wildlife management policies, because it allows for the comparison of data from from different environmental contexts and the demographic trends of the populations over the years. The volume, which is aimed at researchers, wildlife technicians of provinces, hunting management institutes, parks, freelancers, students and Voluntary Ecological Guards, illustrates the different monitoring techniques to be applied for the estimation of the populations of birds and mammals and is presented a selection of case studies belonging to the reality of northern Italy, with particular reference to Lombardy.
There are many field cards inserted in the text and referring to the different monitoring techniques and to the different animal groups. The publication was created by researchers from the University of Insubria in Varese and the OIKOS Institute and was dedicated to the late Dr. Guido Tosi who, with his decades of work, contributed to giving dignity and authority to the profession of the faunist and to enhance the Lombard fauna.
The volume is available free of charge at Palazzo Lombardia, DG Agriculture, Entrance No. 2, 3rd floor, blue sector, room 4, Piazza Città di Lombardia n. 1, 20100 Milan.
