The Province of Cagliari works to protect biodiversity and fight the proliferation of non-native animal species.
To the Provincial Council of Cagliari the councilor Modesto Fenu illustrates the approved agenda regarding the protection of biodiversity on the island; in particular "The Provincial Council of Cagliari, in order to decisively address the environmental emergency represented by the invasion of alien and invasive species that endanger biodiversity and favor the repopulation of wild fauna and noble and sedentary Sardinian game, mandates the Prime Minister, the councilor and the Environment Commission to activate all possible actions deriving from their own competences ".
As part of the initiative, the Provincial Council asks to "initiate all consultations aimed at pursuing the protection of the natural environment, with a view to partnership, with the other interested parties, Sardinia Region, Forestry Authority, agricultural trade associations, hunting associations and other stakeholders in the sector ".
In fact, the councilor Fenu explained, "Specifically, given the damage caused and the now uncontrolled exponential spread of invasive alien species, it is requested that the regional department for environmental protection change the decree on the guidelines for the control of the nutria in Sardinia as it is inadequate to deal with the emergency ".
Continuing, the councilor said, "Damage from coypu and other invasive alien species must be included among the indemnifiable damages, making them fall within the field of application of regional law 23/98".
Also on the agenda is the evaluation of the possibility that "the nutria, like the crow, is included among the huntable species and that the percentage of animals that can be killed with a firearm is changed, bringing it from 20% to 100%".
With the approved document, authorization is also requested to carry out "at least three extraordinary hunts, outside the Hunting Calendar, for the control of invasive alien species and pests, recognizing the authorized participants, by way of reimbursement of expenses, a prize for each certified slaughtered animal ". Furthermore, in the context of combating harmful species, the need for appropriate collaboration between the competent departments for rodent control interventions was highlighted.
