Hunting and Fauna: in San Casciano, in the province of Siena, a meeting was held to inform farmers, hunters and citizens on how to counter the attacks of wolves.
Illustrate economic measures and opportunities to prevent and counter wolf attacks on sheep farms. The passage of a pair of Apennine wolves in Santa Cristina in Salivolpe was shown to the citizens with the projection of a video made by photographer Tommaso Nuti. Hundreds of citizens took part in the initiative organized by the Municipality and the Province of Florence on the theme of the presence of wolves in San Casciano. Farmers, hunters, residents of the area, even standing up, listened to the interventions of the provincial and municipal administrators and experts who are following the dynamics of the wolf in the San Casciano area, captured in a video made by the naturalist photographer Tommaso Nuti.
From the document emerged a pair of pure Apennine wolves hunting in the area of Santa Cristina di Salivolpe. "The evening - comments the mayor Pescini - saw the participation of many people and the discussion with the public, in particular with farmers, was very constructive, following the speech by Duccio Berzi and the video by Tommaso Nuti thanks to which the community was able to acquire correct and balanced information on the passage of wolves in Santa Cristina ”. To illustrate the issue in detail, exposing the possible conflicts with livestock farms, the absence of danger for humans and the strategies of coexistence, was the wildlife technician Duccio Berzi.
“We have ascertained the presence of wolves on the hills of San Casciano - he explained - specimens with a thick tail, a voluminous head and gray fur characterized by black streaks; the fact can give rise to undoubted and understandable concerns in farms that carry out livestock activities; in fact, if on the one hand, by feeding on wild boar and roe deer, the animal helps to rebalance the presence of wild ungulates in Chianti, on the other it causes considerable damage to sheep farms by attacking the prey closest to tusk: the sheep; but the wolf is also an animal that fears and flees man so there is no fear for those who frequent the woods: hunters and citizens can rest assured, it will hardly happen to cross one of these animals and, if it occurs, they will witness the escape of the wolf ".
During the evening, the tools and opportunities to prevent and combat the predations of wolves against livestock farms were illustrated. “There are many measures - added Berzi - that farmers can adopt to repel the attack of wolves such as electrified fences, acoustic bollards and guard dogs; there are also economic opportunities made available by the Region and Province to obtain contributions through participation in public tenders ”.
In addition to the mayor Pescini, the evening was attended by the provincial councilor for agriculture Pietro Roselli, the councilor for the municipal police of the municipality of San Casciano Renzo Masi and some representatives of the provincial forestry corps and the provincial police.
