As part of the active surveillance plan for the hunting season "October 2021 - January 2022", the Prevention, Veterinary Health and Food Safety Service of the Umbria Region in collaboration with theExperimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Umbria and Marche, carried out a monitoring to obtain information on the health status of the wild boar population in Umbria in particular in relation to hepatitis E (Hev) infection.
This was announced by the regional councilor for health, Luke Coletto explaining that the hepatitis E virus (Hev) - whose transmission can occur through the consumption of water or contaminated food including in particular wild boar meat - has taken on in recent years an ever greater importance in terms of risk for public health, as the main causative agent of acute viral hepatitis.
Therefore, the Regional Prevention Service - apart from the in-depth analysis of the monitoring carried out on 179 wild boars with a percentage of hepatitis found in the liver of the 43 percent of the animals tested - always recommends a good cooking of wild boar meat before consumption.
