In compliance with the rules for the protection of wildlife, the Region must in fact determine the maximum hunting density index and the maximum number of hunters admissible for each individual hunting area. The 2013/2018 Regional Wildlife Plan, approved in June 2013 by the President of the Sicily Region, Rosario Crocetta, identified and determined the Sicilian agro-forestry-pastoral territory (Tasp), having an extension of 2.409.161,20 hectares, and the relative territory intended for the protection of wildlife, covering an area of 844.248,90 hectares, equal to 35% of the Tasp and therefore higher than the 20% required by law.
The Plan also establishes, again for the period 2013/2018, an average hunting density index of 0,020 hunter / hectare, corresponding to 51,2 hectares / hunter: provisions that have been used by the regional department for the calculation of the index. maximum hunting density for each hunting area. The maximum index must in fact be related to the regional average index and must take into account the environmental conditions and the characteristics of hunting homogeneity among all the Atc of the Region.
The decree therefore established for the 2014/2015 hunting season a maximum hunting density index per hunting area of 0,0308 hunter / hectare, equivalent to 33,25 hectares / hunter. The Region has also established the maximum number of hunters admissible in each territorial area, divided into regional hunters or from other regions.
The hunters who could potentially operate in the 23 territorial areas are 48.165. Currently 36.194 hunting cards are withdrawn, while 16.736 subjects are eligible for each ATC: 90%, equal to 15.064 places, is reserved for regional hunters, while the remaining 10% (1.672 places) is available for extra-regional hunters.
