Hunt in Sondrio: The Province opens the selection hunt for wild boar and asks for the help of hunters to face the emergency.
Yesterday the Province of Sondrio authorized the selection hunt for wild boar as the population of these ungulates has become too numerous for the territory in which it is located and the damage is increasing; for the killing the Provincial Administration asks for the help of the hunters of Valtellina and Valchiavenna who, once authorized, will be able to kill all the wild boars that they encounter according to the established rules.
The start of the selection for wild boars is scheduled for next 8 October and hunters interested in collaborating with the Province will have to collect a special authorization card from the provincial offices or in the offices of the various hunting committees.
The hunters for the selection must in any case respect certain rules including having already practiced the selection hunt for ungulates; they must not have been subjected to sanctions in the last five years and must not have ongoing proceedings relating to infringements in the field of hunting.
Only rifles with the permitted calibers may be used for selection hunting for wild boar; moreover, the selective hunting activity can be practiced only during the hunting days for ungulates foreseen by the provincial Hunting Calendar and only by hunters who will still have hunting days available and have not exhausted their slaughter plan.
The hunter who kills a wild boar must take the carcass to the meat market in Piateda or to the Turcatti butcher's shop in Grosotto, authorized centers for the processing of game, accompanied by the appropriate completed card. If the meat is considered edible, the wild boar will be sold in a public auction before which the hunter who killed the slaughter will have the right of first refusal on the purchase.
In the last few years the Province of Sondrio has already organized a slaughter plan for wild boars, with specialized teams and operators, but nevertheless the population of these ungulates continues to grow; for this reason this year the provincial administration asked the hunters to collaborate to face the emergency in the provincial territory against this animal considered incompatible with the environment of Valtellina and Valchiavenna which not only puts biodiversity at risk by placing itself in conflict with the other wild animals, but causes considerable damage to the agricultural, forestry and wooded heritage.
The president of the Province of Sondrio, Massimo Sertori, explained, “The inclusion of wild boar in an irresponsible way has determined in some areas a presence of wild boars which is decidedly dangerous and destructive for the environmental context”.
Continuing Sertori specified, “For this reason we will intensify the checks and verifications to find those responsible for these initiatives. I would also like to clarify that allowing the killing of wild boars does not mean making this species huntable. On the contrary, we will be adamant: making it huntable would involve the risk of introducing the species also in other areas that have so far been excluded ”.
