The risk area
That of cormorants is a problem of no small importance as far as the province of Lecco and in particular for Lake Annone. Wanting to be more precise, this body of water is located in the northern part of Brianza, at the entrance to the Magrera valley west of the city of Lecco. What specifically is happening?
It's all the guano's fault
The alarm was raised by Stefano Simonetti, number one at FIPSAS Lecco: the parasites of these birds end up infesting the fish fauna of the lake, involving other lakes in the Lecco area. Simonetti was very clear in this sense: “It is the guano of the cormorants that transmits the parasites. The overcrowding of cormorants on the branches and perches along the basins and waterways means that, from there, excrement rains in quantities proportional to the birds”.
Dangers for human consumption
Simonetti himself then added: “The guano ends up in the water, where it is swallowed by the fish fauna. The parasites develop in the form of worms in the host species and human consumption becomes highly risky. We have clear feedback in Annone and Oggiono, but the same happens in Valmadrera and Lecco".
